Refractometer Refractometer
Measuring Salinity
As aquarists we have long put up with poor methods of accurately measuring the specific gravity of the water in our tanks. We long ago gave up on swing arm and floating glass hydrometers, mostly due to the inaccuracies and the need to compensate for temperature.

The gold standard for measuring salinity has always been an optical refractometer. These have usually cost anything upwards of £200.00 for a decent temperature calibrated model.

Recent advances and bulk buying have now brought these products into the realm of the everyday Aquarist. A consistent approach to tank salinity is important for the animals and in recent years we have heard a good few horror stories. Where people's tanks start going into decline and they loose corals. All down to inaccurate swing arm hydrometers, showing readings like 1024 when the actual salinity was closer to 1035. These sorts of inaccuracies cause long-term stress to fish and corals making their internal organs work that much harder to expel the salts.

With accurate measurement from these refractometers these sorts of problems should be a thing of the past and at these prices there is little reason not to own one.

Reducing T Pieces Reducing T Pieces
These are handy little devices that allow main pump pipes to be tapped and reduced to airline size outlets. Ideal for feeding a calcium reactor, denitrator or other devices that require small volumes of water.

Many of these items are far more effective when the unit is operated under a constant pressure. This is especially true of many makes of calcium reactor. You should always check with the manufactuers instructions to see if the equipment is suitable for pressure operation.

High Sensitivity Phosphate Test Kit High Sensitivity Phosphate Test Kit
High Sensitivity Phosphate Test Kit
Right from the beginning of setting up an aquarium the management of phosphate is of paramount importance. Phosphates enter the aquarium through make up water and foods fed to fish and corals. Once in the aquarium they fuel nuisance algae's and retard or even poison the growth of hard corals. To achieve growth that approaches that of coral in the wild phosphate needs to well managed. Even low levels will inhibit growth, the result is that often many costly resources such as light and water movement are all added to enhance growth will be wasted.

Measurement and detection of phosphate has up till know been through lower quality test kits produced to cost rather than a detection standard. The only alternative for the dedicated has been expensive lab grade kits that offer high sensitivity but also the cost.

The new high sensitivity phosphate test kit goes a good way to squaring that circle offering lab grade performance at a more realistic price. This new test kit rather than offering the ever lightening shade of blue that becomes almost impossible to detect without an electronic colorimeter, changes hue to give a very clear set of low level readings.

A welcome advance

100 tests per kit

AquaScape Reef Putty AquaScape Reef Putty
This is a brand new product that offers a good few advantages over standard milliput epoxy.

The most obvious is that the product has been coloured purple to more closely resemble coralline algae leading to a much more natural effect in the tank. No more messy white blobs while you are waiting for coralline to cover.

The formulation has also bee improved to make the product more easily worked under water whilst attaching corals.

The putty is a handy two part epoxy that will fully harden under water and can be used for a whole range of purposes the enclosed instruction sheets lists plenty of good ideas from making bases to protect clams to ataching rocks and corals.

A good step forward.

NB: Attaching corals to a firm structure improves and quicken adhesion, growth and general health, corals do not like to rock about in the flow. It also helps corals being kncoked off by passing animals. Attachment for most corals is a natural thing.
