Nitrite is particularly problematic in new aquaria, or after an increase in fish stocks. It is the second stage of the nitrogen filter cycle. It is an intermediate product created by the bacteria that consume ammonia. The bacteria that consume nitrite are slower to colonise the filter leading to a build up in the aquarium. Nitrite causes stress to fish, reduces the ability of oxygen to be taken up in the bloodstream and will generally lead to opportunistic disease attacking the fish. We recommedn regular testing during the early life of the tank or after an increase in fish stocks.
